How to swap crypto without KYC: options, costs and honest risks

The ways to swap crypto without an account or ID (DEXs, cross-chain protocols and instant exchanges), what each costs, when KYC can still be required, and how to stay safe.

"No-KYC" swaps let you change one cryptocurrency into another without creating an account or uploading an ID. People use them because they want to swap from their own wallet in minutes, because their country is poorly served by big exchanges, or because they simply don't want to hand a passport scan to every service they touch. Data breaches at exchanges are common, and the less you share, the less can leak.

This guide covers the three main ways to do it, what each costs, and the honest catches. It isn't legal advice: account-free swapping is legal in most places, but taxes still apply, and you're responsible for following your local rules.

The three ways to swap without an account

1. Decentralised exchanges (DEXs)

On Ethereum, Base, Arbitrum, Solana and other smart-contract chains, a DEX swaps tokens directly from your wallet. Uniswap, Jupiter and the aggregators that route through them never ask for ID, because there is no company holding your coins: a smart contract does the swap and you sign it yourself.

  • Custody: you keep it the whole time. This is the safest option for funds.
  • Limits: tokens on the same chain only, plus bridges between EVM chains. A DEX can't give you native Bitcoin, Monero or Litecoin.
  • Costs: the pool fee (often 0.05–0.3%), slippage and gas. Check the gas tracker before swapping on Ethereum mainnet.
  • Risks: fake tokens, unlimited approvals and phishing front-ends. Scan the token with the token safety checker and revoke approvals you don't need.

2. Cross-chain protocols

Protocols such as THORChain swap native assets (BTC, ETH and others) between chains using liquidity pools and a network of nodes, with no company account. They're more decentralised than an instant exchange, but they support fewer coins, the interfaces vary in quality, and you need to understand memos and minimums. Fees include a liquidity fee plus outbound network fees, which can be noticeable on small amounts.

3. Instant exchanges

Services such as ChangeNOW work differently: you choose a pair, paste the address where you want to receive the new coin, and send your deposit to a one-time address. The service swaps on its own liquidity and sends the result back, usually within 5–30 minutes.

  • Coverage: the widest, with 1,000+ coins including BTC, XMR, LTC, TRX and tokens on many networks.
  • Custody: the service holds your coins during the swap. That's the core trade-off.
  • Costs: the fee is built into the quoted rate, and you also pay the network fee for your deposit. A fixed rate locks the amount you'll receive; a floating (standard) rate is often slightly better but moves while your deposit confirms.

Our no-account swap page embeds ChangeNOW. It's an affiliate link: we earn a share of ChangeNOW's fee, and it doesn't change your rate.

When "no KYC" still means KYC

This is the part many sites leave out. Instant exchanges are regulated businesses with anti-money-laundering (AML) duties. They screen incoming deposits automatically, and if a deposit is linked to stolen funds, sanctioned addresses or mixers, or simply trips a risk rule, the swap can be paused until you verify who you are and where the coins came from. If you can't or won't, getting a refund can take time.

What that means in practice:

  • Most ordinary swaps from your own wallet go through without questions.
  • Swapping coins that recently came from a hack, a darknet market or a mixer will very likely be frozen. Don't.
  • Large amounts are more likely to be reviewed. Split nothing to "stay under limits"; that pattern is itself a red flag. Use a regulated exchange if you're moving serious money and are happy to verify.
  • Read the service's AML and refund terms before sending. ChangeNOW publishes them on its site.

DEXs don't freeze swaps this way, but front-ends can block sanctioned addresses, and stablecoin issuers can freeze tokens at the contract level.

A safe swap, step by step

  1. Pick the right network. "USDT" exists on Tron (TRC-20), Ethereum (ERC-20), Solana and others. Sending on the wrong network is the most common way to lose funds.
  2. Use your own receiving address. Paste an address from a wallet you control. Send a tiny test first if it's a new wallet.
  3. Add the memo or tag if the destination needs one (XRP, XLM, some exchange deposits).
  4. Copy the deposit address, don't type it. Then check the first and last 4–6 characters, because clipboard malware swaps addresses.
  5. Send the exact amount shown, and keep the exchange ID until the coins arrive.
  6. Check the site is real. Fake swap sites are a classic scam. Type the address yourself or use a bookmark, and run unfamiliar links through the phishing link checker.

Red flags

  • A "swap" site that asks you to connect your wallet and sign something to swap BTC or XMR. Instant exchanges only need a deposit; a signature request is a drainer.
  • Anyone asking for your seed phrase, ever. See wallet drainer protection.
  • Rates far better than every other service, or a support "agent" who DMs you first.
  • Pressure to send more to "unlock" a stuck swap.

Taxes still apply

Swapping one crypto for another is a taxable disposal in many countries, including the UK and the US, whether or not the service knew who you were. Keep a record of the date, the amounts and the exchange ID for each swap.

Not financial or legal advice. Crypto is volatile, and every service carries counterparty, smart-contract or operational risk. Only swap what you can afford to lose while it's in transit.
